The term "self-catering" or 'holiday homes' or 'rental accommodation' applies to a broad range of country houses, cottages and serviced apartments. These establishments provide cooking facilities in addition to sleeping facilities.

This type of accommodation is most suitable when you will be staying in an area for an extended period (i.e. one week or more). Most self-catering accommodation facilities are rented by the week, although shorter rentals may be available in some locations and in particular at low season.

Self-catering establishments are rated from 1 to 4 stars, with the higher star ratings awarded on the basis of progressively higher levels of quality and customer care.

Individual self catering properties in Ireland as well as holiday home complexes & apartments are classified according to the star classification system.

Four Star: These properties are of the highest standard and offer extra facilities. Many may have en suite bedrooms or have two bathrooms.

Three Star: Properties of this standard are all furnished to a relatively high standard. Some may provide an en-suite bedroom and laundry facilities are usually standard.

Two Star: Furniture and fittings in these properties are of satisfactory standard for Tourist Board Approval. Many if not all will have a well-equipped kitchen.

One Star: These properties meet the minimum standards required for approval by Failte Ireland. Simple but comfortable accommodation with basic facilities are features of these premises.
